Molecules are common here on Earth and also surprisingly ubiquitous in space. In this talk I will discuss why molecules should not form in space and why they do after all and where they are found. I will also highlight the important role they play in the evolution of the Universe. Finally, I will discuss the potential role such molecules could have played in the development of life here on Earth.
A talk by Professor Anthony Meijer, from the University of Sheffield
A short Bio
After studying Chemistry at the University of Utrecht, Anthony Meijer did his PhD in the area of theoretical chemistry at the University of Nijmegen, graduating in 1996. After post-docs at Wayne State University and University College London, where he worked with Prof David Clary, FRS as part of the Centre for Cosmic Chemistry and Physics, he was appointed lecturer in Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Sheffield in 2003, where he is currently Professor of Theoretical Chemistry. His area of research can be summarised as the theoretical study of chemical reactions. The two main areas within that are electron transfer reactions and the formation of molecules in the interstellar medium.
