It's now become a lot more difficult for North Korean defectors to cross the border into China.
China has laid out new rules for border cities to keep defectors out of its territory following a recent agreement with the isolated regime.
Han Seong-woo has the details.
China has begun its crackdown on North Korean defectors this week.
This follows a meeting between China's Minister of Public Security Zhao Kezhi and the North Korean ambassador to China Li Ryong-nam on Monday... where they vowed to strengthen strategic cooperation to maintain security along their border.
With a shared border of nearly 1,350 kilometers, China and North Korea are divided by two rivers and Baekdusan Mountain.
As part of the agreement, patrol boats are now on intense watch for unidentified boats without flags along the Amrok River.
The city of Baishan has even ordered that defectors be arrested and is offering rewards to locals who report them with cash incentives of over 150 U.S. dollars... or 300 dollars for those who actually take defectors to the authorities themselves.
North Koreans now living or working illegally in China are also subject to the crackdown.
