Former Supreme Court Judge, Justice Madan B Lokur, speaks to Barkha Dutt in the 40th episode of our podcast, 'Inside Out with Barkha Dutt.'
Justice Lokur has authored more than 150 judgments. He is known for presiding over matters of social justice, earning his Bench the “social justice bench” moniker. Over the years, he authored landmark judgments in various constitutional cases, including the one that struck down 4.5% reservation, including access to prestigious Central Educational Institutions under the Act of 2006, for Muslims and other minorities. He was also one of the four senior judges of the Supreme Court who mounted a virtual revolt against the chief justice, listing a litany of problems that they said are afflicting the country’s highest court and warned they could destroy Indian democracy. The unprecedented move at a joint news conference by the four judges, including Justice J Chelameswar, the second senior judge after the Chief Justice of India, left the judiciary and observers stunned, leaving uncertain how this open dissension in the hallowed institution would be resolved.
