Chennai: The Iron Lady of Manipur, Irom Sharmila,got married to her long-time friend British citizen and activist Desmond Countinho in Kodaikanal in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu. The marriage took place is a simple manner without any fanfare. On 5 November 2000, she began a hunger strike in Manipur which she ended on 9 August 2016, after 16 years of fasting.
