(2023) Spyke loves his donut ring! Sometimes, you can catch him taking a break from wrestling with it and wearing it like a necklace🤣 You can see Spyke and his antics in the Discovery Area when you visit the Refuge.
Spyke was historically a very active and spry leopard, always stalking people. Over the years, he has calmed down quite a bit into more of a lazy leopard. He is also part of our behavioral management program. In fact, he is the smartest of all the cats we work with. Through this type of husbandry training, Spyke allows us to voluntarily inject him with necessary vaccines and handle his tail for voluntary blood draws.
Species: Leopard (Panthera pardus)
DOB: August 15, 2008
Sex: Male
Arrival Date: Born at TCWR
Rescue Story: On May 12, 2008, our staff members returned from Hoosick Falls, New York with four new cats. The two tigers and two leopards came from a zoo that had temporarily lost its license. Zambo, a black leopard, and Santania, a spotted leopard, had been a breeding pair for years.
Zambo was neutered on his second day at TCWR but Santania was already pregnant. On August 15, 2008, she gave birth to two beautiful little cubs, one spotted, and one black. Sadly, the spotted one died soon after birth. But Spyke thrived on the loving care and attention provided at our refuge and grew rapidly into a beautiful adult leopard.
