What actually happened when 6 boys were shipwrecked for 15 months on a deserted island?
In 1954, William Golding told the story of a young group of British teenagers being stranded on a deserted island, with disastrous consequences. The young boys become beasts and all become lost in a system with no social regime and order. This view of human-nature has largely been accepted, that left to our own devices we would turn into savages.
But what if the Lord Of The Flies actually happened in real-life? We know how the fictional novel goes, but what if this actually happened? What would the results be?
Fortunately for you & I, it did actually happen. Rutger Bregman, historian and best-selling author of Utopia For Realists & Humankind: A hopeful history, discovered that in 1965 6 boys actually ended up shipwrecked on an island for 15 months.
In this short video, Bregman explains why the Real-life Lord of the flies story is actually one of hope and friendship.
