Speaking to reporters at the Halifax International Security Forum on Saturday, ministers from Canada’s Liberal cabinet condemned violent anti-NATO protests that broke out at Place Émilie-Gamelin in Montreal on Friday night.
“What we saw was not peaceful protest. What we saw was violence, hate and anti-Semitism,” said Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly. “This was nothing like lawful, peaceful protest. This was anarchy. It was engaging in violence and hatred on display,” added National Defence Minister Bill Blair.
Beginning in the late afternoon, protesters reportedly began smashing windows, two vehicles set alight, and objects were thrown at authorities. The Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SVPM) say at least three people were arrested for assaulting officers.
Organized by the Divest for Palestine and the Convergence of Anti-Capitalist Struggles group, the demonstration coincided with the 70th annual NATO Parliamentary Assembly, which is being hosted in Montreal this weekend. The assembly is expected to discuss issues including continued aid and support for Ukraine amid its war with Russia, as well as climate change.
