After it was reported contestants on German Big Brother won’t be informed of the growing coronavirus pandemic on the outside, it was confirmed housemates will finally be told in a special live episode this week. Contestants on the reality show don’t have a clue how many people around the world have the deadly Covid-19 virus now, after going into the show, and thus, quarantine, weeks ago. They also have no idea about the steps governments are taking to combat the spread, with many now practicing social distancing and self-isolation. According to German broadcaster Sat.1, the group had not received any updates since entering the house on 6 February – and it seemed they wouldn’t be getting any. Defending their decision not to tell the contestants, the station claims they will be informed if it’s necessary. However it seems that station has had a change of heart, as it announced a live special episode, due to air before the regular slot at 7pm on Tuesday evening, local time. After consultation with relatives of the housemates, Sat.1 confirmed the housemates will be told of the growing crisis, releasing a statement to its website on Monday. Housemates will be given the opportunity to ask host Jochen Schropp and Big Brother doctor Dr Andreas Kaniewski questions about the state of the nation, as well as receive video messages from their relatives. Previously, the station told German publication Süddeutsche Zeitung: ‘Of course, the residents will be informed if there is reason to do so. ‘Which information is given to the residents from outside is also decided in exchange with the relatives.’ The station claimed the housemates will most likely only be aware of the cases diagnosed in Wuhan and other isolated cases globally from before entering the house, and they tested negative upon arrival. Any intruders joining from the outside were previously told to keep the news of what’s going on in the real world to themselves – which is usually what happens anyway, to be fair. It comes after a viral clip that has been shared on YouTube showed contestants in the Canadian Big Brother house discussing why there was no audience to cheer out the first person who has been evicted. Their confusion towards the empty audience suggests they have no idea what’s happening in the outside world. Australian Big Brother contestants were informed this week, with production working in line with current health guidelines. Got a story?
