My name is Jeff Dyer with RHE Hat-Co, the manufacturer of Stetson and Dobbs hats in North America, and I'm here today at Fashionable Hats to talk about hat topics. One topic that comes up is “my hat’s fitting a little too tight or my hat’s fitting a little too loose - what can we do about it?”
Well, if your hat’s fitting a little too tight, we have what is known as a hat stretcher.
This is one that they sell here at Fashionable Hats, the Befitted. And it’s really simple and easy to use. Turn the hat over. Place it into the hat. Turn the buckle, and what it’ll do is it’ll stretch to the hat. You can usually get maybe a quarter of a size out of a stretching. It's not here to take a seven and a half to a seven and 5/8, but it'll take it somewhere in between there. And that happens a lot of times, especially if you're in a area where you have seasons and you've put your hats away for the summer, while you’re wearing straw.
They make this shrink up a little bit, so it's a nice way to give it a little stretch, get them to fit like they did back in the old days. It doesn't take a lot of time, or sometimes you might not even want to have to do it and leave it overnight, but usually not that long. And the hat will fit a little better. There we go.
Another thing - well what do I do if my hat’s a little too loose? That's easy to fix, too. Fashionable Hats has these sizing strips. They're also easy to do. Take the sweatband. Pull it up, and you can place the strips inside the sweatband. Usually one in the forehead, one at about 5:00 and the other one at about 7:00.
Put them in. Turn it down. See how it feels. And then when you find out exactly that it feels comfortable, you can take off one side and there's a sticky side to it. And you want to stick that to the sweatband, not to the hat itself, but to the sweatband. And you just fold it back in. You'll have a nice tighter fit if your hat has loosened up or you've gotten a haircut.
