STORYLINE
Amongst the tragedy of the Beslan school siege and its bloody conclusion are some stories of hope.
Zalina Dzandarova thought she would never see her daughter again, after being forced by the terrorists to leave her behind.
On the second day of the siege, the hostage takers gave her an agonising choice - she could leave the school and take her two-year-old son Alan to safety.
But she would have to leave her six-year-old daughter Alana behind, to an uncertain fate.
And she had to decide immediately.
The choice came as the terrorists allowed 26 mothers and babies to leave the school on 2 September.
After thinking briefly, Zalina left the gymnasium where the hostages were being held, taking Alan with her, while Alana screamed for her not to leave.
Even now she cannot explain exactly what prompted her decision.
When the siege ended in gunfire and explosions, Zalina was nearby with hundreds of other relatives.
Along with her mother, she rushed to the hospital, where miraculously they found Alana.
Apart from some very minor injuries, she was unscathed.
Alana said a 15-year-old boy had saved her when the gunfire started.
So far, Alana and Zalina have not discussed the choice the mother was forced to make.
Zalina also did not want to talk in front of the camera.
The psychological scars are likely to last for many years.
Still, the family know they are very lucky to have been reunited.
