We are all after the same things in life: respect, love, and happiness. I believe in living a frugal, minimalist lifestyle because I think it allows me to achieve these things in my life. Being frugal allows me to have more control over my money while minimalism allows me to get the most out of everything I own. In our consumer driven society, most people live very materialistic lives constantly chasing possessions; however, I do not think that you can achieve respect, love, and happiness through materialism.
In this video, I encourage you to look elsewhere with "5 Reason Materialism Isn't The Answer."
1. The More You Pursue Happiness, The Further You Get Away From It
When you pursue a very materialistic life, you are really pursuing happiness. You are pursuing happiness through buying a bunch of material possessions hoping they will provide happiness in exchange; however, it normally does the opposite. The ironic thing about trying to pursue happiness is, "The more you pursue it, the further you get from it." Materialism isn't the answer to happiness because happiness is a by-product of something else.
2. Your Identity Consists Of Many Factors, Possessions Being Just One
Materialism is often about expressing yourself through your possessions. We often use possessions to construct our identity; however, the problem with this is that it puts too much focus on your external being. In addition to our possessions, our character, experiences, and knowledge create our identity. Materialism isn't the answer to identity because possessions are just one piece of who you are.
3. Self Worth Doesn’t Need To Be Proven
Although many people wouldn't admit it, materialism is all about impressing other people and trying to show that you have value. We buy nice clothes, cars, and houses thinking that it will make us have a higher self worth; however, your self worth is not your net worth. You were born worthy and do not need to prove yourself to anyone. Materialism isn't the answer because self worth doesn't need to be proven.
4. Freedom Means Less
Oftentimes, people seek a materialistic lifestyle thinking that it will provide freedom in their lives as they aren't limiting or depriving themselves of anything. It doesn't matter how rich or poor you are, materialism will find a way to trap you and limit what you can do in life because "The things you own end up owning you." Materialism isn't the answer because freedom is achieved through less.
5. Life Just Doesn’t Work In Extremes
We live in a world of extremes where we're either living in one extreme or the other. Materialism is one of the extremes because it puts so much emphasis on material possessions; however, you are not your things. Materialism isn't the answer to freedom because life is about a balance. Don't live in extremes and find the balance between the two.
