In the wake of the murder of a bus driver near the University of Washington Wednesday morning, leaders of Amalgamated Transit Union 587, which represents transit operators in King County, have called for increased police presence and safety upgrades on buses.
Around 3 a.m., bus driver Shawn Yim, 59, was maced by a passenger, then dragged from the bus and stabbed to death in an alley near University Way Northeast and Northeast 41st Street, according to police.
The incident was captured on the bus cameras, but police are not releasing images of the suspect for now. Seattle police said the investigation is still active, and they are searching for the man, who was only described as 6’1” and wearing a blue jacket.
Hours after the murder, ATU 587 President Greg Woodfill called a press conference with leaders of King County Metro, the King County Council, and the Seattle City Council.
