(18 Sep 2019) Exiled opposition lawmaker Julio Borges is urging the international community to step up pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Borges, who is also known as Juan Guaido's point man for foreign affairs, told journalists Wednesday in Colombia that nations should tighten economic and diplomatic measures against the Maduro government after a breakdown in Norway-sponsored talks with the opposition.
He said European nations shouldn't naively believe that Maduro is negotiating in faith because he chose to leave the talks on two occasions.
Borges added that the opposition presented a deal that included having both Guaido and Maduro step down before new presidential elections.
He said that Maduro's team chose to walk away instead of reaching a resolution.
The special envoy said that foreign nations should focus on targeting members of Maduro's government, front men and relatives who still benefit from corruption and have not yet felt the impact of economic sanctions.
