With the rival parties fighting tooth and nail over the assembly speaker spot, you might be wondering why the position is so coveted.
Our parliamentary correspondent Park Ji-won outlines some of the responsibilities, powers and perks of the position.
One of the most important duties of the National Assembly speaker, according to the National Assembly Act, is to oversee parliamentary proceedings.
That means the speaker can convene plenary sessions or committee meetings, and designate the deliberation periods for bills.
The speaker also has the final authority over all parliamentary affairs.
When certain conditions of urgency are met,... the speaker has the power to directly introduce bills to a plenary session for a vote,... without having to put the bill through the usual deliberations at the standing committee level.
During his or her two-year-term,... the speaker also appoints the secretary-general of the assembly secretariat,... a minister-level position,... as well as the deputy secretary-general for legislative affairs and the deputy secretary-general for administrative affairs,... both of which are vice-minister-level positions.
The speaker also oversees the parliament's roughly four-thousand employees... and the assembly's 468-million U.S. dollar annual budget.
On top of all of that, the speaker gets a number of perks that other lawmakers don't.
Whereas lawmakers have nine aides,... speakers have 23,... including a chief secretary,... a senior secretary for political affairs and a senior secretary for policy.
Four bodyguards always follow the speaker,... and the speaker's office is about 13-hundred square meters,.. which is about nine times larger than the offices of other lawmakers.
The speaker also has an official residence,... a three-story house built on a 77-hundred-square-meter plot of land.
