Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, Fantastic Tomb of an Ancient Civilization
Mausolus was the king of the ancient city of Halicarnassus (Halikarnassos), which is now located in what is now southern Turkey. The word "mausoleum," which is a noun that means "a structure, especially a huge and imposing one, that contains a tomb," is derived from this name. The Mediterranean and Aegean Seas meet at the city's bay.
In 353 BC, his wife Artemisia II of Caria constructed an opulent mausoleum for her deceased husband. In some point, the tomb at Halicarnassus rose to fame and was included in the list of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Before an earthquake eventually damaged the mausoleum's columns and several of its sculptures, it stood for centuries. Then the stone ruins were stolen by the robbers. Now, all that is left of the building is its foundation.
