Throughout the Second World War, there were many horrific and terrifying guards who worked inside of the concentration camps. Many men and women were called to serve as part of the SS inside of camps such as Bergen-Belsen, Dachau and Auschwitz, and they became known as some of the most sadistic war criminals in History. They caused and contributed to the executions, torture and slaughter of millions of people, and at the end of the war there were many people who were horrified to see how many of the war criminals who had been sentenced to death for crimes against humanity were just young women in their 20s when they were led towards the gallows. Most of these women had been ardent Nazis and they were ruthless in their actions which caused terror, and of there 50,000 guards who served inside of the Nazi concentration camps around 10% of these, roughly 5000 were women who were there to oversee the female camps inside different sites. These were dangerous women who had grown up and been indoctrinated by the Nazi youth groups and by the policies of Hitler and his government, and they joined in with the extermination of certain groups in Europe. They became Aufseherin’s (Auf Sehr In) or female overseers and some of the most notorious women such as Irma Grese were known to have executed and killed with their own hands. But why did women join the concentration camp’s staff, and what punishments did they receive at the end of the war?
