UPDATE: Sociocracy 3.0 is continuously evolving to accommodate our learning. Some things have changed since this recording:
1. Step 7: Any objection to the proposed nominee?
Traditionally (Sociocratic Circle Method) this step involved going around the circle in a round, checking one person at a time if they had any objection to the proposed nominee taking on the role. The proposed nominee was asked last, to give them every opportunity to understand everyone else's perspective first. The problem with this was that it compromised equivalence because people who shared later in the round, had more information than those who shared first. Therefore, we now ask everyone to show their hand at the same time in step 7. If there are any objections, then we process them one at a time (beginning with any possible objection from the proposed nominee first. At the end of the process in step 8, we ask the proposed nominee one more time, to see if they have any further objection to taking on the role.

This video is a recording of a Role Selection demonstration filmed during a Sociocracy 3.0 Introduction course led by Lili David and James Priest in February 2018.
Role Selection is a Sociocracy 3.0 pattern from the category of patterns Co-Creation and Evolution. It’s a group process for selecting people for roles on the strength of the reason, rather than according to the majority.
Using Role Selection as an alternative to the traditional approach of assigning people for roles, enables an organization to tap collective intelligence, increase ownership over the decision and ensure support for the role keeper by those affected.
Notes:
- This pattern can also be used in any situation where there is a need to choose between a variety of options.
- To avoid influencing others, abstain from expressing personal interest or opinions before a selection takes place.
- Sometimes a role selection reveals a lack of capacity, relevant experience, qualities or skill. A group may need to consider outside candidates, reprioritization or an alternative way to account for the domain.
