🔷 Annually, Vistula discharges 30 cubic kilometers of water to the Baltic Sea. Over the years, the load of pollutants discharged into the Baltic Sea has been significantly reduced due to the improvement of water and sewage management, also in the Warsaw agglomeration. The collector under the bottom of the Vistula discharges sewage from seven districts of Warsaw to the "Czajka" treatment plant. It serves a million inhabitants, hospitals, office buildings and industrial facilities.
🔷 Unexpectedly, on August 28 collectors break down under the bottom of the Vistula. Every second almost 3 tons of untreated sewage gets into the river. At a crisis staff meeting, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki orders the construction of an emergency pipeline by Polish Waters. The Polish Army erects a pontoon bridge on which two pipelines with a length of 1,100 m each are laid. An intake, emergency pipeline and a droppipe are created, to which the pumped sewage goes. Every second, the pump system pumps 3 tonnes of wastewater to a height of 12 meters.
🔷 The pace of activities and construction time of the installation are a record on a global scale. Thanks to the involvement of over five hundred people, including two hundred soldiers and constant pump operation, sewage discharge to the Vistula is stopped. An emergency bypass pumps a quarter of a million tons of waste daily, protecting the Vistula and the Baltic Sea from tons of harmful substances.
🔷 Finally, as many as 14 million cubic meters of sewage were pumped through the emergency pipeline.
