LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s basketball team trailed by as many as 16 points to New Mexico State University Aggies but battled back to force overtime before falling 76-75 on Thursday at the Pan American Center.
The Vaqueros (8-10, 3-3 WAC) had five players in double-figure scoring with redshirt junior Zhane Templeton leading the way with 15 points and six rebounds. Graduate student Jordan Agustus added 14 points with eight rebounds and five assists. Redshirt junior Amara Graham chipped in with 13 points, redshirt sophomore Ashlei Lopez added 12 points and junior Trelynn Tyler scored 10 points.
Gia Pack led New Mexico State (7-12, 4-2 WAC) with a double-double after scoring a game-high 26 points with 11 rebounds. Soufia Inoussa added 11 points while Adrianna Henderson chipped in with 11 points and nine rebounds.
In overtime, both teams went back-and-forth as Pack got the scoring started with a three-pointer before back-to-back buckets from Agustus and Tyler gave UTRGV the 73-72 lead with 3:04 to play.
After a layup from Tayelin Grays gave the 74-73 lead to New Mexico State, Tyler answered with a jumper to give the lead right back to UTRGV before Henderson hit the game winner with .2 seconds left on the clock.
The Vaqueros found themselves trailing at halftime 34-23 as a bucket from Lopez got the scoring started in the second half but the Aggies answered with an 8-0 to take their biggest lead of the game at 42-26 with 7:32 left in the third.
Lopez knocked down a pair of free throws to kick off an 20-2 run for the Vaqueros that a saw a layup by Templeton tie the game before a layup by Graham gave UTRGV the 46-44 lead with 1:27 left in the third.
The Aggies responded with the first four points of the fourth quarter before a three-point play by Graham got UTRGV within 52-51. New Mexico State rallied on a 10-2 run that was capped by back-to-back three-pointer by Pack for the 62-53 lead with 5:43 left in regulation.
Tyler and Templeton knocked down back-to-back threes of their own to get UTRGV back within 62-59. Later in the fourth, a three-point play by Agustus made it 67-66 New Mexico State before a fast break layup by Templeton tied it at 69-69 to end regulation.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Thursday, January 30, when it travels to Phoenix to face Grand Canyon at 9 p.m.
