What is leukemia?
Cancer in white blood cells is called leukemia. Abnormal white blood cells develop in the bone marrow and enter the bloodstream. These affected cells replace the healthy cells which make the patient more susceptible to infection.
Who is at risk of developing leukemia?
• Children with immune system disorders
• Children with immune system suppression
• Children with a history of exposure to radiation, chemotherapy, and chemicals
Symptoms of blood cancer
Common symptoms of blood cancer include fever, fatigue, increased infections, increased bleeding tendencies, bruising, rashes, bleeding gums, loss of appetite, and more.
Diagnosis of blood cancer
• A simple blood test is done to find WBC count
• This is followed by imaging, bone marrow test and biopsy
• Lumbar puncture might also be done to analyse the CSF
