With strong signs of autumn visible, and winter approaching us, the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway in Kent would host their annual Autumn Gala, over the weekend of 26th-27th October 2024.
The gala would see every operational steam locomotive in action, alongside diesel No.12 J.B Snell, hauling services along the line from Hythe to Dungeness, with various services double or triple headed, and top and tailed. The event also saw some visitors, with ‘Anne’ and ‘Soony’ visiting from the The Perrygrove Railway, and St Egwin from The Valley Railway Adventure. The gala was due to be the last event for No. 3 Southern Maid before overhaul, however it would sadly fail with injector problems on the Saturday of the event, and as such did not feature on the Sunday.
Filmed on a day with endless sunshine, it would allow the locomotives on the ‘mainline in miniature’ to stand out perfectly throughout the day. As is always tradition, the gala would end with a multi-header from Hythe to New Romney with all the operational steam locomotives, however with various delays in the timetable, by the time it left Hythe the light had all but gone which was a slight disappointment, but what certainly wasn’t was the spark infested fireworks show that ‘Anne’, leading the multi-header, provided.
