Swapped in a 3.4L v6 from a 1996 4runner into my 1989 Toyota 4runner with an r150f transmission and 4x4 4wd. The 1996 motor was an automatic transmission vehicle but I was still able to use the ECU (or ECM to some, whatever) to run the engine. It still won't go into closed loop idle but drives great with good throttle response.
