We are secure because of the finished work of Christ applied to us through the Holy Spirit. So Ephesians 1:13 (get the order here), “In Him you trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, in whom also having believed you were sealed with a Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession to the praise of His glory."

What does all that mean? When you hear the Gospel and you respond to the message, the offer of eternal life by faith in Christ, you respond in faith. God, the Holy Spirit seals you will seal of God. Having the seal of God not only provides for us the protection of God until the fulfillment of our plan, but the Greek verb sphragízō is a word that actually we use the phrase all the time “Signed, Sealed and Delivered.”

Signed -- We have the mark of God on us.
Sealed -- that is, we're protected.
Delivered -- We're going to make it to our ultimate destination.

So this is where we get the idea of eternal security. How gracious of God that He would make it so simple even a child could understand.
