It's odd the things you end up doing that you never thought you'd have to do. One of those is stealing a rat from a Magpie. She got over it pretty quickly even if she was unimpressed by the bales. And he treats my suggestion at the birdbath with contempt.
When I saw her trying to kill something in the distance, I wasn't sure if it was a toad or a rodent. At 4pm, neither should be out and about. But it didn't move the right way for a toad and I figured it had to be a rat - possibly poisoned. I use a rat poison that won't effect reptiles, birds, anything that might eat a dead animal. I don't know about the neighbours.
She took my theft surprisingly well. I had a pet rat when I was at uni - I really liked her. I don't like rats that eat fruit off my trees, make a mess in the shed or attract venomous snakes. Anyway, the rat was dispatched and buried and out of misplaced guilt I called her over to try out the new bales for the first time.
Either she's too well-fed to worry about a few roaches or these were unproductive. These bales were part of an experiment - would putting lots of sticks, some sticks or no sticks under different bales affect the amount or type of insects under them. First results are bad for sticks. There was a fairly big centipede under the first bale. The roaches seemed to be under the sticks which are too big for the magpies to move themselves - so it's not a good idea really.
I really like the first birdbath clip - he's perfectly happy completely ignoring my suggestion - fair 'nuff.
In the second birdbath clip they were foraging across the yard passed the birdbath. He has a little warble. They didn't specifically come for a drink but she had one in passing before continuing foraging. They'll often forage around the birdbath without taking a drink at all.
