"STEM Outreach for K-16 Earth and Environmental Science Education: Texas as Art"
By: Dr. Rebecca Dodge
First Aired: November 30, 2021
Dr. Dodge has been creating materials to train Earth science teachers to better prepare students and engage their interest in geoscience careers early in their education. She will present her interactive “Texas as Art” outreach project which engages students and teachers in the study of landforms and ecoregions through an art exhibit with educational activities covering topics such as groundwater management, natural hazards prevention and mediation, origin of geologic structures, and human impacts on ecosystems. State Parks (or other state-managed lands) anchor each of the artworks, and provide outreach videos that students can relate to their local landscapes. We will view the exhibit and engage with outreach materials interactively.
Now more than ever, with the new national standards elevating Earth science in high schools and an increasing need for future Earth scientists to address some of the biggest challenges of this century, providing teachers with materials to teach Earth science in new and exciting ways is crucial.
