Metallica, their ascent to fame was relatively quick, driven by sheer work-rate, effort and a rare musical chemistry. After hitting the opener’s circuit in LA (where they supported the likes of Saxon) they recorded their first ever demo "No Life ‘Til Leather". The tape-trading circuit went crazy for it, and after they had repeatedly well-received shows in the Bay Area. Here are 20 facts about Metallica. Number 1, the band was formed in 1981 in Los Angeles when vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield responded to an advertisement posted by drummer Lars Ulrich in a local newspaper. Number 2, When Lars and James met through an ad, they tried jamming together. James was very unimpressed as Lars’ cymbals kept falling. But after that brief meeting, Lars got a spot on the Metal Massacre album by Brian Slagel. This move attracted James back and from then on, the rest is history. Number 3, Rob Quintana came up with the name Metallica and others like MetalMania. He was thinking of different names for his fanzine. He asked for Lars’ to help in brainstorming. When he mentioned Metallica, Lars quickly suggested another name so he could use the name Metallica instead. Number 4, the shortest song Metallica created to date is “Motorbreath,” it is 3 minutes and 8 seconds long. Number 5, the longest song they made so far is “Suicide & Redemption” off of Death Magnetic. It is 9:57 minutes long. Number 6, the sounds of Metallica and Thin Lizzy were being used in 2010 on the frontline in Afghanistan to repel the Taliban. It worked. Number 7, in 1983, when Dave Mustaine, the first official lead guitarist of the band had left, he joined Megadeth. Number 8, Mustaine was actually fired from the band. He was also very salty and insisted that he contributed to a lot of the riffs that made his replacement, Kirk Hammett, famous. Number 9, the band’s aggressive instrumentals, and fast tempo sound placed them alongside Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer as one of the founding “big four” bands of thrash metal. Number 10, Metallica has 14 Grammy awards. Number 11, James Hetfield wears a skull ring and also a wolf pendant. These things were originally owned by Cliff Burton and were bought at The Great Frog, a Jeweler based out of London. Number 12, James Hetfield went to rehab for alcohol and “other” addictions back in 2001. Apparently, one of the “other” addictions he had was chocolate. He did apparently experience weight gain around that time. Number 13, Germany is the country outside the United States that Metallica has played the most in, at exactly 104 concerts. Number 14, in 2008, when the album Death Magnetic was released, five of their songs became number one in the Billboards Top 200 even though there is heavy criticism regarding the production of that album. Number 15, Hetfield can be heard singing lead vocals on the track “Hell Isn’t Good” in the 1999 film, South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut. Number 16, In 2006 Metallica were in an episode of The Simpsons called “The Mook, the Chef, the Wife and her Homer.” Number 17, Kirk Hammett uses Rogaine. Hammett began losing his hair in the 90s. Number 18, Born in Denmark, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich was a tennis prodigy in his youth. Number 19, they began writing shorter, simpler songs partly because of how bored their fans looked during their concerts. Lead guitarist Kirk Hammett told Rolling Stone in 1991 "We realized that the general consensus was that songs were too fucking long." Number 20, the song “Fade to Black” is allegedly about when the bands equipment was stolen in Boston, while they were preparing for their first European tour. Among the stuff stolen was a Marshall amp that was special. ... The band searched two continents looking for a replacement amp with the same sound. Thank you for watching!
