Paulownia trees, also known as foxglove trees, are easy to grow from seeds sown in the spring or autumn in containers. They grow best in full sun, fertile but moist soil, and a frost-free environment for the first couple of years. Here are some tips for growing paulownia trees:
Soil: Paulownia trees grow best in fertile, moist soil that's at least 1.5–2 meters deep and well-drained. Avoid clay, rocky, and soaked soils, and soils with more than 25% clay or less than 50% porosity.
Sunlight: Paulownia trees grow best in full sun.
Watering: Water paulownia trees once a day for the first few weeks, and provide additional watering if annual rainfall is less than 100 mm per month. Large soaks are generally better than frequent, short watering.
Location: Paulownia trees grow best on a sunny slope facing southeast, and should be protected from strong winds. Sloping land is usually better than flat land, and lower slopes are better than upper slopes.
Fertilizing: Fertilizing young paulownia trees is important in their first years.
Spacing: When planting out paulownia trees, space them 6.5–8 meters apart, or in single rows at least 5 meters apart.
Protection: Protect paulownia trees from grazing animals.
Paulownia have huge 12in long leaves and therefore need wind protection. They grow best in full sun in a warm spot in a fertile but moist soil. As very greedy plants they will grow just as fast as you can feed them up in rich soil and added compost or manure.
