Robert Nathaniel Dett was a Canadian-American composer who often used African-American folk songs and spirituals in his compositions. 'Honey' is taken from a 'characteristic suite' that dates from 1913; and its title In the Bottoms refers to the river bottoms in the southern states of America. The suite portrays pictures or scenes known to those who lived there, while 'Honey' is a term of endearment for a loved one.
