Reason #20 for being a Muslim: Islam emphasizes the rights of children.
Dr. Shabir Ally says that while children’s rights are protected in modern human rights documents, they’re already acknowledged in the Quran. For example, he explains that in ancient Arabia, before the time of the revelation of the Quran, people sometimes killed their children for fear of poverty. In the 6th and 17th chapters of the Quran, God prohibits that practice. Moreover, after the child is born, the child has to be nourished. Until the child is weaned, it is the father's responsibility to bear the financial costs of getting the child nursed. A hadith says that whoever does not respect the elders and have mercy on children are not from the community of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
