When it was first introduced in 1953, the Rolex Submariner was originally only available as a stainless steel watch fitted with a black dial and bezel. However, the collection has expanded over the years into a range of different professional dive watches that are offered in a number of different color and metal options.
In 1967, Rolex unveiled its first date-displaying Submariner in the form of the ref. 1680. While the arrival of this model marked a significant milestone in the Submariner’s evolution, the watch was still initially only available in stainless steel and with a black dial and bezel.
In 1969, Rolex introduced the ref. 1680/8 in solid 18k yellow gold to be offered alongside the standard stainless steel model. In addition to being the first gold Submariner, the ref. 1680/8 also came with the option of either a black or blue dial and bezel. This marked the first time that the Submariner had ever been available with a dial and bezel color other than black; however Rolex only offered blue on the solid gold model.
The next Submariner generation arrived in the late 1970s and marked the arrival of sapphire crystals and unidirectional bezels. It also introduced a new material option to the collection: Rolesor - Rolex’s name for both steel and gold components on a single watch. Just like before, the stainless steel models were only available in black; however the two-tone ref. 16803 and solid gold ref. 16808 were both offered with the option of either black or blue dials and bezels.
By the end of the 1980s, Rolex had updated the Submariner again. Almost identical to the previous generation in their overall appearance, the new models were based on Rolex’s updated Cal. 3135 movement. Again, blue dials and bezels were only available on the precious metal versions, with the two-tone ref. 16613 and yellow gold ref. 16618 offering the option of either black or blue.
This generation of blue Submariner watches remained in production for around 20 years, until Rolex unveiled an all-new generation in 2008 with the yellow gold ref. 116618 and the white gold ref. 116619. Like before, the yellow gold model was offered in either blue or black; however, the white gold ref. 116619 (aka “Smurf”) was only available with a blue dial and bezel.
In addition to debuting a new case with thicker lugs and crown guards, this new generation also featured bezel inserts made from Rolex’s proprietary Cerachrom ceramic material, rather than aluminum like its predecessors. In 2009, Rolex added an updated version of the two-tone Submariner with a ceramic bezel with the ref. 116613, again with the option of either black or blue. This generation remained in production until 2020, when Rolex discontinued all existing Submariner models and replaced them with an updated series with 41mm cases.
Despite their larger cases and new movements, the new two-tone blue Submariner ref. 126613LB and yellow gold ref. 126618LB follow the same general design as the previous generation; however the text on their blue dials has been updated from gold to white. The white gold “Smurf” from the previous generation featured both a blue dial and bezel, yet the new ref. 126619LB is fitted with a black dial and only features a blue ceramic bezel.
The most affordable blue Submariner watches are the two-tone ref. 16803 and ref. 16613 models with aluminum bezels, with prices starting out around $8k to $10k on the pre-owned market. The most expensive blue Rolex Submariner watches are the solid gold ones. The whtie gold “Smurf” is typically the most expensive option, with examples selling for $35k to $45k on the secondary market, but there are certain vintage ref. 1680/8 watches that have been known to sell for values in excess of $50,000.
The blue Rolex Submariner has become a true industry staple, and for more than a half-century, the iconic Swiss watch manufacturer has offered precious metal versions of its legendary dive watch fitted with stunning blue dials and bezels. With prices ranging from around $8k to well over $50k, there is a blue Submariner out there for every wrist and budget, making it easier than ever before to add one of these classic luxury watches to your personal collection.
