In 1945, an iron curtain descended across the middle of Europe which was not lifted until 1945. Sonneberg is located just inside Thuringia which was occupied by the Soviet Union and thus came part of East Germany. On the other side of the border at Neustadt is Bavaria. The road shown here existed before the construction of the border wall and was reopened once it was taken down. The sign shown here says that nothing can now be seen of the former border emplacements, but only a few metres away, I show that the border road used by the East German security force is still very clearly visible.
