YSRC legislator RK Roja was gheraoed by farmers near Inavolu village in the capital city area in Andhra Pradesh on Thursday while she was on her way to a university to attend a seminar. The farmers demanded that Roja should extend her support to their agitation. They also raised slogans against the proposed three capital cities plan and wanted Roja to announce her support for Amaravati.
The Nagari MLA, who is also the chairperson of AP Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC), was forced to remain confined to her vehicle till police reached the spot and dispersed the agitators.
As information about Roja's presence at the university spread. farmers from nearby villages, including a large number of women, rushed there to join the agitation. They also blocked the road leading to the varsity and waited for her to come out, while shouting slogans against the government.
Sensing trouble, additional police force was sent to the area. DSPs Srinivasa Reddy and Durga Prasad too reached the spot and tried to persuade the protesting villagers to clear the road.
As the agitators refused to budge, police diverted Roja's vehicle from the back gate of the university campus. But the word spread soon and the agitators immediately sent messages to villages on the other side of the campus and asked them to block the MLA's vehicle. In no time, another group blocked Roja's vehicle near Peda Parimi village.
The MLA was confined to her vehicle for about two hours as the agitators raised slogans outside and refused to leave till Roja extended her support to their movement. They said they were not 'paid artistes' as the ruling party is branding them but are fighting to protect their self-respect. The police finally had to resort to mild lathicharge to clear the way for Roja.
The capital area farmers said they will intensify their agitation against the capital shift in the coming days. They also demanded the withdrawal of criminal cases filed against them for allegedly preventing revenue officials from conducting land survey. On Wednesday, a group of government officials had to leave the area when they went there to carry out a survey for distribution of house sites to the poor. "We gave our agriculture lands for the construction of capital city. we will not allow the government to distribute them as house sites to the poor," said one of the agitators.
MRO Vanajakshi who came to time light after she was beaten up by former MLA Chintamaneni Prabhakar in TDP regime has now faced the wrath of the farmers at Tadepalli in Vijayawada Rural Mandal over the abusive comments. The farmers alleged MRO of calling them as real estate brokers. "Being in a responsible position how she could make such derogatory comments like a politician, " farmers fumed.
The incident is said to have happened while MRO has come to Tadepalli for land acquisition program. Vanajakshi reportedly have hit the farmers when they were expressing their objections to the land acquisition. However, the farmers who were not willing to give their lands for the government programme for housing plots to poor people have raised voices against the MRO and went on to attack her. Farmers were upset with the way the M RO has treated them by calling real estate brokers.
