Yet, the steel industry is the source of a considerable amount of global carbon emissions and contributor to climate change, according to the GEM Steel Report. As development rockets throughout the globe, decarbonization of steel making is becoming an important issue.
However, the steel industry has been identified as one of the hard-to-decarbonise sectors that will make decarbonisation of steel difficult yet possible.
The GEM Steel Report 2022 identifies a number of steps the steel industry could take on the road to decarbonisation. This includes a shift toward electric arc furnaces; Asia must be a priority region, as much of the globe's steel demand and production originates in Asia; clear definitions and standards that are International accepted; and a clear and accurate reporting of the steel industry's carbon emissions.
