~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The paper was submitted to a Q1 / A Ranked journal. I agreed to review the paper by reading the title and the abstract because they caught my attention. I thought it will be an interesting piece of research. Hence, I spent a fair bit of time reading the paper thoroughly so that I could understand what the authors were trying to convey/accomplish.
This paper had the following sub-sections
Title
Abstract
Introduction
Literature Review - 5 subsections
Methodology - 4 subsections
Results - 4 subsections
Conclusion
Implication
References
Total 42 pages long in double line spacing. Over 10000 words. More than 100 references, 10 pages of references, approx. 2000 words.
~~~~Now let's come to the main core of the paper. ~~~~
Why did I recommend this paper be rejected?
To answer this let's first look at what questions did they try to answer:
This paper wanted to answer the 5 questions about the use of social media for enhancing customer engagement.
Very promising topic and very practical in nature. Something that will be very useful for digital marketing professionals.
~~~~Research Questions / Hypotheses~~~~
Their questions were something along these lines:
1- Are internet-based start-up companies better at using social media to build customer engagement. Yes/No
2- Do businesses that have other businesses as their customers, so B2B, do they engage with individual customers. Yes/No
3- If you generate quality content will it lead to better engagement. Yes/No
4- If your content has called for action, will it result in higher engagement. Yes/No
5- Whether informing your customers via social media that your business in open during COVID lead to customer loyalty Yes/No
~~~~Main Reason~~~~
This brings me to the main reason for rejecting this paper.
You see the main issue with this paper was that it tackled a WRONG PROBLEM.
The questions that were raised in the research paper are known to the digital marketing community. They know the answers already.
It may not have been discussed in the academic literature, but that does not mean that that knowledge does not exist. It just exists in a different knowledge base.
~~~~Reference List~~~~
I then looked at the reference list and as I expected, almost all references were academic references.
If the authors would have looked at some white papers published by renowned marketing agencies I think they would have found the answer before starting this research.
~~~~Core Message~~~~
So what the core message that I want to convey here. If you are answering a wrong question, no matter how thorough your research is, it is of limited value and it will be hard to publish in a good journal.
~~~~Broaden your thinking~~~~
I think researchers should broaden their thinking and start thinking about the impact that their research will bring to the society or community.
Think about this, if I asked you to take your research findings or research paper and give it to industry practitioners who you think will benefit from your research, ARE YOU CONFIDENT TO give it to them and ready to get their honest feedback? or are you a bit hesitant?
~~~~Industry Academic Gap~~~~
Why is there a gap between academia and industry? This could be one of the reason.
Equally, we should think about what could be done to reduce this gap?
~~~~PhD Life~~~~
See as a PhD student, you are going to spend 3-4 years of your life doing research. Shouldn't you give a thought of what question you are going to answer and have you validated your research question before starting your research?
Because you do not want to in this position where your research may be thorough but the research question is wrong.
Give it a deep thought. It is very important and will help you immensely in your research journey.
~~~~Take away message~~~~
Apply the knowledge that I shared in this video.
Remember this 10 min video has the potential to make you a successful researcher if you follow my suggestions.
