The aim of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb is to attack western and French interests in the region, this is very linked to the ongoing war in the Sahel region since years. Today al-Qaeda has proved its capacity to attack countries in Western Africa, showing that the organization gave a green light to Mokhtar Belmokhtar who just rejoined the group to hit targets in those countries who were out of its reach.
