Dr. Erica Montes (@the.modern.mujer on IG) and I discuss the safety of Tylenol in pregnancy!
SMFM:
The SMFM Publications Committee has reviewed these new studies along with the prior literature including the drug safety communication from the Food and Drug Administration. Similar to prior studies reporting an association between prenatal acetaminophen and increased odds for childhood neurobehavioral issues, these newer studies have significant methodological and design limitations.
Based on our evaluation of these studies, we believe that the weight of evidence is inconclusive regarding a possible causal relationship between acetaminophen use and neurobehavioral disorders in the offspring. As with all medication use during pregnancy, communication regarding the risks versus the benefits of prescription and over-the-counter medications use should occur between patient and provider.
ACOG:
Neurodevelopmental disorders, in particular, are multifactorial and very difficult to associate with a singular cause. The brain does not stop developing until at least 15 months of age, which leaves room for children to be exposed to a number of factors that could potentially lead to these issues.
ACOG’s clinical guidance remains the same and physicians should not change clinical practice until definitive prospective research is done. Most importantly, patients should not be frightened away from the many benefits of acetaminophen. However, as always, any medication taken during pregnancy should be used only as needed, in moderation, and after the pregnant patient has consulted with their doctor.
BabiesAfter35:
The prolonged, chronic, unsupervised use of tylenol in ANYONE is not recommended.
Taking tylenol in appropriate doses short-term is safe.
DOSE:
Regular strength: 325-650 mg every 4hr as needed; not to exceed 3250 mg/day. Extra Strength: 1000 mg by mouth every 6-8hr as needed; not to exceed 3000 mg/day. Under direction of a healthcare professional.
No studies show a definitive association or causation between tylenol use in pregnancy and neurodevelopmental disorders in children, including autism.
