The Maithon Dam is located at Maithon, 48 km from Dhanbad, and 240 Km from Kolkata by Road. It takes 4 hours. 22 km away from Asansol, on the border of West Bengal and Jharkhand, nestled in the lap of 'Hyangla Pahar'- the 'Hungry Mountain' is the holy place-Kalyaneswari . The name Maithon is said to have been derived from Mai-Ka-Than meaning 'Holy Mother's Abode', the 500-year-old famous Kalyaneshwari Temple, dedicated to a form of Mata Kali and is said to be built by a Hindu King Harigupta. Bengal is at one end and Jharkhand on the other end. The Dam is very well maintained while one can take a paddle boat for a overall view of the lake. No Good Restaurants while the hotels are all almost empty. West Bengal tourist Bungalow is situated at top of hill without any maintenance in a shabby shape. You can spend a maximum of 1-2 hours as there is not much to see.
