VICTORIA -- The Supreme Of Canada ruled unanimously today the INSITE safe injection site in Vancouver can remain open. The decision opens the door for other cities across the Province such as Victoria to create their own.
The facility provides clean needles and a safe place for users to inject, something that has never been available in the Capital. Three years ago a needle exchange was shut down, and since then agencies have gone mobile trying to provide a safe alternative to sharing needles and spreading disease.
The Vancouver Island Health Authority says it will not proceed with plans until it consults the Ministry of Health, stakeholders and the City, but Mayor Dean Fortin says they are already looking at safe injection site models.
No timelines or proposed sites have been decided upon, but a comprehensive dialogue is expected to get underway shortly.
