CEMEX were approached by Amco to provide a sprayed concrete solution to line an old existing brick rail tunnel at the rear of Liverpool Central Station.
The contract posed many difficult challenges for Amco that including building a temporary platform over a live railway line so that works could continue without interfering with the 24 hour train service.
Working closely with Amco and Spraying sub contractor Gunform , CEMEX helped to design and test a sprayed concrete solution which was to be supplied ready-mixed from our nearby plant at Liverpool docks
The length of tunnel to be sprayed was around 200 metres with very tight access and only one entrance point … this meant that concrete had to be discharged and then pumped along steel pipe to the robot
The concrete was designed to not only pump a long way but hold its consistency for up to 2 hours on site and yet still adhere to the tunnel after the spraying application.
The concrete mix included microsilca and a combination of various specialist admixtures-supplied by CEMEX and BASF. Each load took around 20-30 minutes to batch due to the complicated nature of the product.
CEMEX supplied the contract with around 800m3. over a 6 week period
