To understand the causes of squint, it is important to know what is squint. Squint is basically a misalignment of the two eyes. Normally when we look any person or at any object the two eyes get aligned together and look at the same spot. Now when this doesn’t happen, say for example, one eye is looking straight and the other eye is looking at some other point it is at this situation that we call as the squinted eye. Now why do we get squint? We get squint because, the basic problem would be that one of the eyes is one of the eyes is seeing lesser than the other eye, for example if my right eye is seeing lesser than the left eye, then it is obvious that this eye will be focusing an object, whereas this eye won’t be able to focus that same object. Hence it will move away. It is the natural position of the body to move away and down for any eye. That is called the natural position of the rest and hence any eye will try to occupy that position when the vision is significantly less. So, hence one of the most important cause of squint would be low vision in one eye. So the low vision can be caused due to cataract, the low vision can be caused due to refractive errors like myopia or hypermetropia. It can be caused due to improper development of the nerves of the eye. It can happen due to opacities in the eye in the eye in the media. This is the among the most common causes of squint. In addition to this, squint also can happen when there is an imbalance in the muscles of the eye. We have muscles in the eyeball, I can show it to you here. In the eyeball there are muscles all around. So we have muscles on the top, at the sides and at the bottom and at the back of the eye. So when any of these muscles get imbalanced. We have symmetrical muscles on either sides, say for example this muscle of the right eye, corresponding muscle of the left eye do not balance each other and one of the muscles of one of the eye is working either more than necessary or less than necessary, this also can give rise to squint.
