When the referendum took place, the whole of Ireland was called to the polling stations. In the North, an overwhelming majority voted for peace. And in the South, the yes victory received wide public acclaim.
But the peace process was quickly undermined. On August 15, 1998, just three months after the referendum, a car bombing ripped apart the tiny town of Omagh in Northern Ireland.
29 people were killed and another 220 injured. IRA dissidents, who called the Peace Process a betrayal, claimed responsibility. For them, there could be no peace as long as Ireland remained divided.
