Mr Ferran discusses the common causes of clavicle fractures. The symptoms involve strong pain in the shoulder with swelling, bruising, and deformity over the clavicle. If nerves get compressed from the swelling pain can also radiate down the arm. Mr Nick Ferran is an experienced shoulder and elbow surgeon and consultant. His expertise includes the management of clavicle fractures.
Most clavicle fractures are treatable without any operation using a sling. Some high energy and displaced fractures may require surgery. A patient requires up to 3 months to completely recover after the operation. Patients are motivated to begin light hand movements; however, heavy lifting should be avoided for 3 to 4 months.
Mr Ferran recommends early consultation for clavicle fractures to determine if surgery is required to relieve the pain.
