When the wind and waves are coming from different directions, a horrible rolling motion can start affecting the boat. If the harmonic between the boat and the wave period is in sync, then this can magnify the rolling making life on board very uncomfortable.
To lessen the rolling and break the harmonic, a simple flopper-stopper can help. We don't have dedicated gear on board for this (you can buy flopper stoppers), but use our shore chains (normally used to wrap around rocks when taking a long line ashore), our dingy towing bridle (a Y shape bridle that attaches to the two towing points on our dinghy), and our big black builder's bucket.
This is how we rig it:
1) Set up the spinnaker pole on the side that the waves are coming from
2) Suspend the dinghy towing bridle from the pole with the dinghy attachment clips hanging over the water
3) Attach our shore line chains to the bridle clips
4) Attach our big bucket to the shore line clips too
5) Drop it in the water.
You can see at the end of the video that we manage to break the harmonic that's bothering the other boats near us. It doesn't stop all movement, but it makes a big difference.
