Clara Schumann (1819-1896) - Piano Trio in g-minor, op.17 (1846)
00:15 - 11:12 1. Allegro moderato
11:20 - 16:25 2. Scherzo - Tempo di Menuetto
16:30 - 21:25 3. Andante - più animato
21:30 - 29:40 4. Allegretto
Composed shortly before her 27th birthday in 1846, Clara Schumann´s piano trio (one of only two works of piano chambermusic, the other one being the Romances for violin and piano, op.22) is a wonderful example of German romantic style, very personal, very intimate and never seeking attention for technical purposes only.
For this, her first work of chambermusic, she chose the genre of piano trio - most probably because her husband Robert had NOT composed one yet (op.88 not being counted as a full piano trio). She presented it to him on their 6th wedding anniversary, and he returned the favor shortly afterwards by composing his Trio no.1 in d-minor, op.63.
Even though Clara Schumann was very critical of her own trio, the critics were not; the reception of this composition was brilliant, praised for its form and content and for being highly poetic.
