PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the DefExpo 2022 in Gandhinagar on Wednesday. With the theme of 'Path to Pride' the expo is billed as India's biggest ever defence exhibition. Modi laid the foundation stone for a new air base in Deesa. He also unveiled the HTT-40 — an indigenous trainer aircraft designed by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, or HAL, at the India Pavilion. He also launched 'Mission DefSpace', an initiative to develop innovative solutions for defence forces in the space domain. This initiative will also provide a boost for industry and startups, it is expected. DefExpo 2022 also marks the celebration of one year of the formation of seven new defence companies. These companies were carved out of the erstwhile Ordnance Factory Board. This year's DefExpo is said to be the first ever edition exclusively for Indian companies, where 'Made in India' defence equipment are being displayed. Besides Indian companies, Indian subsidiaries of foreign OEMs, divisions of companies registered in India, and exhibitors having a joint venture with an Indian company, are participating in the expo.
In another first, states and Union Territories have also been invited to set up pavilions at the expo. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasised that states and UTs will get an opportunity to participate in nation building. Further, they have an opportunity to attract investment and bolster their potential of indigenous aerospace and defence manufacturing. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Modi called the Defence Expo a symbol of a "new beginning".
