I’m Alexis Ohanian co-founder of Reddit and I’m here at BMW today and see the latest in their autonomous vehicle technology. Hey, I’m Alexis, hey, I’m Fred. Howdy Fred, a pleasure to meet you, nice to meet you. How long have you been here with BMW? I’ve been at BMW for 29 years, I’ve seen the technology developed from almost no autonomous driving to where we are now. Right now we have level 2 autonomous vehicles in the market. were developing the level 3 that will appear in 2021 on the inext and we’re working on a fleet of level 4 autonomous vehicles and level 5 is I’m just chilling, I could be asleep. With level 5 there’s no need for a steering wheel, there’s no need for pedals, you’re just along for the ride. So this is a new level 2 feature, It’s called backup assist the car is remembering the path you’re driving and it will duplicate that path by itself in reverse. It’s a surreal feeling but I just got a trust, now what if someone walks behind this car right now sensors will capture that image and hit the brakes. We have cameras we have radar, we have lidar, and ultrasonic sensors so using all of that data we make a sensor fusion to see what are the surroundings 360 degrees around the bar you can almost see people around us as though there’s a camera crew, it’s almost like there’s a camera around there are no blind spots here right this exactly everything around you autonomous vehicles are able to avoid critical situations that a human would never even be able to see. The drivers will learn to trust the car over time, that will be this aha moment when the customers will let the car take control there is a ton of history here but there is no feeling of complacency, every part of this organizations is now aligned towards this autonomous future and knows this is where it’s all headed not every journey has an end.
