Protests in San Juan against the governor of Puerto Rico turned violent on Wednesday night when police fired tear gas at demonstrators who set fires and threw rocks. Governor Ricardo Rossello has been under pressure to resign over leaked, controversial text messages and a federal probe into government corruption on the island.
Rossello, who took office in 2017, has said he respected the right to protest peacefully and vowed to bring greater transparency and accountability to his government.
Rossello said on Tuesday he did not commit anything that could be considered illegal or unethical in the chat, but rather "improper" acts.
