Amanda helped shape health promotion research and education in the University of Edinburgh Medical School, and made major contributions to tobacco control research and policy.
Her main area of research in tobacco control focused on inequalities in smoking and young people, as well as evaluating national and local tobacco control policies. Her work has included young people’s sources of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, smoking in the home, school-based interventions, the national point of sale display ban and how different policies affect inequalities in smoking.
A significant part of the conversation centers on Amanda's advocacy for women's health. Reflecting on her work, she shares insights into how the tobacco industry historically targeted women through advertisements in health magazines. The discussion also touches on the positive transformation in attitudes toward smoking during pregnancy, emphasizing empowerment over blame.
Amanda's impactful career in Scotland's health sector is further highlighted, culminating in her recognition with an OBE for outstanding contributions to public health in 2019.
