Beijing Capital International Airport has been monitoring passengers, grouping them and escorting each one home.
Many think China is now safer and are rushing back. That’s putting airport officials under pressure.
The screening process has been taking hours. Buses take passengers to an exhibition center, which was converted into a health check area.
Bloomberg reporter Tom Mackenzie arrived at the center nine hours after his flight.
"It is very busy here. Lots of people from all over the world. Many Chinese residents as well that have been abroad. And a lot of information being passed on. The whole process has been very very long," he said.
Officials then dropped everyone home and notified housing management
about the need for quarantine.
Starting March 16, all international passengers will be held in government-run isolation centers for 14 days.
Infections outside China have surpassed those on the mainland, with Europe reporting more new cases each day than China did at its peak.
