One of the toughest things to learn for a new tractor operator is how to use a front end loader. There are a few techniques and tips that I've learned over the years that may help you with the learning curve. It is like anything else, the more you do it, the better you'll get.

My first tip is to lock the tractor in four wheel drive and keep it there. Unless you're driving on pavement, I never disengage four wheel drive while I'm using the loader. You'll want the engine revved up to about 1500-1600 RPM or better so the hydraulic pump is pumping a lot of oil and the loader is working quickly.

Next, come into the pile with the bucket level, and that's easier said than done because you can't see it. If you have a bucket level indicator it's much easier (and I show you what that looks like in the video), if you don't, drop the bucket down to where it's level and flat on the ground and see where the top of the bucket is. It may have a flat spot up there that you can use to judge where the bucket is in relation to the ground.

Drive into the pile straight with the bucket just touching the ground and level. Then, when the tractor is starting to strain, or when the wheels are starting to turn, lift the loader frame and keep pushing. Do that a time or two more, sort of like a stair step, then, when the bucket is full, curl it back and head to where you're going to dump it.

Keep your load as low as you can without spilling it. That'll keep the tractor more stable. Finally, after you dump, jiggle the bucket a little so everything comes out.

Hope that helps you become proficient at loader operation. Don't be surprised if the first few times you try it there's little or nothing in the bucket. That's normal, don't give up. After using the loader for a while, you'll become an old pro...practice makes perfect!
